In the wake of the recent power outtages, I wondered if the City of Bad Axe has an emergency plan in order. I only heard of two places a person could go to keep warm or to take showers if your home was without heat or water. Most of these plans utilize existing resources with help from a city or county in such emergencies. I know a lot of people, elderly in particular, that could have used a warmer place to stay until the power was on.

The City of Bad Axe is part of the County Emergency Operation Plan. That plan provides for shelter assistance when necessary like the recent ice storm.
Huron County, with the assistance of the American Red Cross opened shelters in Caseville and provided hotel rooms at the Franklin Inn with an agreement at that facility. The Chairman of the Board wanted to let as many people know that we had a plan to provide shelter. To that end he (the Chairman of the Board) called WLEW and put out a public service announcement that said anyone, or anyone that knew of someone needing shelter could call Huron County Emergency Services. The American Red Cross then assisted those people.
It is difficult to find everyone in need of assistance, but our community did an outstanding job taking care of each other and directing them to assistance.
Anyone that has questions about Huron County's Emergency Operation Plan is encouraged to contact Emergency Services at (989) 269-6435.
Thank you.

Ok so I don't know anything about emergency plans but I am writing a book set in Bad Axe and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions I might use. Where do the kids hang out, what do people do for fun, anything like that. I've never been to Bad Axe but you gotta admit, the name rocks.

What exactly is your book about? I'm curious to know more.
I'm looking for Durwin Rice, and old USMC buddy. Last known residence was in Port Austin. He was born and raised in Bad Ax. Please contact me at maven92260@yahoo.com if you have any info.
Thanks, Larry
Hi,
I am a huge fan of the "Cat Who" books written by Lillian Jackson Braun. Wikipedia says that she may have used your fair city as a model and the towns and townships around there.
If it isn't too rude, what is your opinion?
I am replying to Ginger. I have read all of the cat who books at least 5 times each. I never get tired of them. In the book there is a beach town called "Mooseville" instead of Caseville. There is a county seat all "pickax" instead of Bad Axe. There are outlying towns like Ugley instead of Ubly, etc. Many of the descriptions really seem to fit.
I am in California but hope to retire in Huron Co. one day. Looking for anyone who would like to penpal. I'm a special ed teacher, love animals, and was born in 1958.
Pro2ter,
Hi thank you for your reply. And thanks for the information. Now I can look at Caseville on Google Earth and get a better look.
I agree that your area is what she based Pickax City on. The more times I listen to the books the more I would like to live in that area.
Yes I would like to email back and forth if you'd like.
